Players level on goals are ordered by fewer games. Only finals goals count — no qualifiers, no shootout kicks.
Mbappé: 22 goals in 22 games
Mbappé scored 4 as France won in 2018, then 8 in 2022 — including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina, the first in a World Cup final since England’s Geoff Hurst in 1966. In 2026 he added 10, the most in a single tournament since Gerd Müller in 1970, and became the first player to win the Golden Boot twice — in back-to-back tournaments.
That is exactly a goal a game — the best rate of anyone with 20 or more. He broke the record at 27, so 2030 could stretch it further.
Messi: 21 goals and 34 games
Messi holds the record for World Cup appearances (34) and, like Cristiano Ronaldo, played in six tournaments from 2006 to 2026. He had 13 goals before 2026 — 7 of them as
Argentina won in 2022 — then scored 8 more and led his team to the final, lost 1–0 to Spain after extra time on a Ferran Torres goal. Messi was the first player ever to reach 20 World Cup goals, but Mbappé finished the tournament one ahead.
The 2026 World Cup in numbers
The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico was the first with 48 teams, so the schedule grew from 64 games to 104 and added a round of 32. It averaged 2.96 goals per game, the highest since 1970, and for the first time the top four teams in the FIFA ranking — Argentina, Spain, France and England — all reached the semifinals.
This tournament reshaped the all-time list: Mbappé scored 10, Messi 8, Harry Kane 6 to draw level with Gerd Müller on 14, and Cristiano Ronaldo 3 to reach 11 in his sixth World Cup. England finished third after beating France in the third-place game.
Klose, Ronaldo, Müller and Fontaine
Klose scored 16 across four tournaments from 2002 to 2014, the last in Germany’s 7–1 semifinal win over Brazil, passing Ronaldo (15) and holding the record for 12 years. Gerd Müller needed only 13 games for his 14 goals — a total Harry Kane matched in 2026.
The toughest record may be Just Fontaine’s: 13 goals in six games at the 1958 tournament alone, still the most in a single World Cup. The closest anyone has come is Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis with 11 in 1954.
