3 kinds of phone party games
Before you pick a group game for your phone, ask how the group will actually play it. Most phone party games fall into one of three types, each suited to a different night:
| Type | How it plays | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone on their own phone | Each player joins on their own device and answers alone | Remote groups |
| Pass the phone | One phone handed around | Small groups |
| One screen and a ref | The game on a TV, a ref reads and rules, two teams compete | Living rooms, diwaniyas and big nights |
The third type is the most fun when you’re all in one room: everyone watches the same screen, each team argues it out loud, and only the ref needs a phone.
Hajma: a one-screen soccer party game
Hajma is a soccer quiz of the third kind: open it in the browser on a TV, laptop or phone, split into two teams of any size, and pick a ref. Each team chooses three categories for a six-category, 36-question board, and the most points wins.
In the interactive categories the ref can run the question from a phone through a match link, while the big screen shows the game to the room. One account works on the web and the iPhone app once it launches.
Lifelines that swing a match
Each team picks three of five before kickoff:
- Double points — Arm it before picking a question and a right answer is worth double.
- Point drain — Arm it first, and a right answer also costs the rivals the same amount.
- Snatch — Take the rivals’ question before they answer: right and the points are yours, wrong and they get them.
- Pass — Hand the question to the rivals to answer instead.
- Two answers — You get two guesses instead of one.

How to choose a phone party game
- Player count: can it handle ten people or more? Team games have no cap.
- Language: are the questions in Arabic, and will a non-Arabic speaker cope? Hajma does both.
- Install: does everyone need an app? Playing in the browser saves time.
- Repeats: a game that skips played questions stays fun week after week.
- Topic: if the group lives for soccer, a pure soccer quiz beats general trivia.
